This is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but why would you have a google map inside your website when you can go into google and create one for free? Does having a google map within your website as well as outside of your website give you better ranking in google??

Having a google map on your website is for the convenience of the people that go to your website. If you have the map already there for your users, they don't have to go through the trouble of going to the google maps website and finding the location.
