Security Assist is producing a Parse error T_STRING

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING or '(' in /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/bowlingsunsetnet/webassist/email/WA_Email.php on line 6

Do I need to update the PHP version?

Yes. I think that means you are running a php version prior to 5.3. The latest version of the email code requires php 5.3 or greater. You just shouldn't update to php 7 yet if you haven't updated all of your database code to mysqli.
