Default User Authentication PHP behavior causing a 500 server error

I have the standard mySQLi user authentication behavior on one client's site, and suddenly today, it started throwing a 500 error. Nothing has changed on the page, and the hosting company (GoDaddy) says they can't pull up any logs to see what the cause may be. For what it's worth, a simple session_start() appears to be causing this as well. What might be going on??

Could be a bad session_save_path in your php.ini file. Lots of times you can see errors if you add this line to the top of a page:

<?php
ini_set('display_errors',1);
?>
