Gaps Between Horizontal Menu items/side bar appearing

I created a horizontal menu. In the theme editor/preview the menu looks fine. However when it is placed on my page there is a gap between each horizontal menu item so that each one looks like a button.

In addition the longer menu items are forcing a slide bar to appear on the right side of the page. This is forcing the page to jerk back and forth as the slide bar appears. Their are only 7 items in the submenu.
