I can't tell by looking at the error alone. If you give me FTP access I could debug it.
Hi Ray, I think the 500 error is because I didn't upload al lthe files required, but I got a separate error - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2). I am presuming that is a server side issue and I have my web host scratching their heads as to why right now, but I might very well take you up on the ft issue really soon. Does that error ring any bells with you?
sending ftp info privately
This is a server configuration issue of some sort. You can see others have run into it with a quick google search like here:

Are you sure the database server name is correct in your connection file? That could be the cause as well. Are you able to connect to the phpMyAdmin on that server?
Hi Ray. It actually wasn't a server error, it was completely my fault.
Just for the record if anybody else needs this...
I had copied some old code across to start my page, and I thought I had removed all the mysql php, but I left an old mysql query on the page. the mysql query had no reference to connect with, and therefore gave an error that looked like a server issue.
Moral - check your code and check again!
