payment approved update database on success page

Hi quick question, on the website I am developing, I have the paypal express and the local checkout payment page, the both go to seperate confirm.php pages and then after payment approved they go to success.php page, this is where I update the database and send out emails. Now my question, I need to add some kind of condition, because during testing I have discovered that IF a customer were to type in the URL success.php then the order will be saved to the database etc. So I need to add in a condition to prevent this from happening. Any recommendations?

Usually the checkout wizard will add the code to the confirm.php and pp_confirm.php page immediately after processing the transaction instead of adding it to the checkout success page in order to ensure payment was actually made.

I suppose an acceptable alternative would be to save a session variable immediately after the payment processing on the confirm and pp_confirm pages and check to see that it was set before inserting into the database and sending the receipt on the success page.
