striping html elements

Hi, Im sure I have asked this before, but perhaps a long time ago.

For my meta tag description I want to bind my category description (but in the database record it is storing html elements which I need for the category page). If I want to use it for my meta tag description, how can I strip any html elements from it?

php:
<meta name="description" content="<?php echo($rsCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryMetaDescription")?$rsCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryMetaDescription"):$rsCategories->getColumnVal("CategoryDescription")); ?>" />

html:
<meta name="description" content="<p>Lighting is the use of additional light to enhance or achieve a more aesthetic effect and we feel our exceptionally priced lighting is the ultimate way to reflect your personality throughout your home. Whether you’re buying from our collection as a gift or for your own home, we have everything from retro lamps and shades to show-stopping chandeliers (and everything in-between).</p>
