Using only a part of a field to use in the ORDER BY statement

I have a field called "Location" where I have cities in the format city, st. (and then some other data) When I set the order of the results I currently am using several fields, but for this particular field I would like the program to only use the characters to the left of the comma. How can I do that

ORDER BY SUBSTRING_INDEX(location, ',', 1), area, showbegin, totaldays ASC
