eCart Free Shipping & Tax Exemptions

I am using MySQL & PHP with Dreamweaver CS3.
I have a fully functional eCart v4.5.

I have (2) sets of products.
- Event tickets (taxable w/ shipping fees)
- Donations (not subject to taxes or shipping fees)

How is this type of activity calculated with the eCart tax & shipping rules?

I need to be able to apply Taxes and Freight to Ticket purchases, and at the same time not apply these fees to any Donations.

It is very possible that the Donations could be purchased alone or bundled along with ticket purchases.

I'm looking for a tutorial or guidance how to accomplish creating rules for this requirement.

in your cart, create a new taxable column. For taxable items, set the value of this column to 1, none taxable items, use 0.

for the tax and shipping rules, Use the "Based on items With A Specific Column Value" trigger:
If the Total Number Of items where the Column [Taxable] has a value of [1] is [>] a
value of [0]

This used so the rule will only apply if a taxable item is in the cart.

For the calculation, use "Based On Items With A Specific value":
Total of [TotalPrice] where [Taxable] has a value of [1] [times] [0.05]

For a 5% tax

Total of [Quantity] where [Taxable] has a value of [1] [times] [2]

for a 2 dollar per item shipping
