SSL redirect using the same domain name

SSL redirect using the same domain name

I found a similar question on the forum, but the code provided didn't work for the questioner and the problem transferred to hidden support. The SSL tutorial showed how to redirect to SSL using different domain names, but not for the same domain name.

What is the procedure for SSL redirect using the same domain name? Should only the checkout pages appear in the SSL directory, or all the ecart files? Should the ecart files appear in both secure and insecure areas?

Thanks

Hi there, I dont know if this may be useful for you, But what I am doing a a complete website redirect to SSL...Im doing the whole website as a secured HTTPS since google is adding https to their SEO algorithm and its stated that in the future they may put more weight on a website having HTTPS so better search results. So I guess there is no harm in doing it now.

so in your .htaccess file add the following code:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.your-domain-name.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301]

RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.your-domain-name.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301]

The above code also handles redirect of non-www to www URLS :)

Not sure I understand this. It seems the htaccess file stays on the main site, but the cart related files go in the ssl directory. Do duplicates of the cart files also need to stay on the main site? Do all the ecart directories (css, etc) move to the ssl directory?

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.example.com/$1 [R,L]

What goes where example.com is - the main site or the first page of the cart? If the main domain, will this redirect the whole site?

Thanks

you would have a copy of the site in the main directory and in the SSL directory

the hatches file would be at the root of the main site.

example.com would be your site domain

this is really server configuration, so if you have additional questions, you should contact host.
