Manipulating dates from a recordset - PHP?

Is there a reference library somewhere that details how to manipulate MySQLi recordset values such as datetime, int etc?

I have a date value from a recordset:
<?php echo($rsEVENTS->getColumnVal("SMTeventdate")); ?>

I'd like to be able to display this as
30
MAR
2014

I've looked at php.net for answers to this but that website doesn't deal with recordset data - or I can't find it at least!

use the date() and strtotime() functions

<?php echo(date("d M Y", strtotime($rsEVENTS->getColumnVal("SMTeventdate")))); ?>
