Updating registered users to different access groups and restricting pages via those access groups

I am trying to use your registration pages to allow self register by an end user. I have done this. But I then need to have a backend admin update that user (once verified that they are an employee) so that they can access a restricted page. I tried access groups but can't seem to get it to work. I only have a few more days left in my money back window to see if this product will fit the bill. any help would be great
