IF statement to display date or nothing (MySQLi Recordset)

I have several date columns in my database which hold a 0000-00-00 value and may never have a proper date value. I am trying to create an 'if' type statement to check if the column value in a MySQLi Recordset is 0000-00-00 and if so, to display nothing (or a piece of text) but if there is a date other than 0000-00-00 then to display that in d-m-Y format. Can anyone help please?

if this code:

<?php echo $recordsetName->getColumnVal("ColumnName"); ?>

outputs:
0000-00-00

you can use this if statement to prevent that:

<?php
if($recordsetName->getColumnVal("ColumnName") != "0000-00-00"){
echo $recordsetName->getColumnVal("ColumnName");
}
?>

I think the above code is slightly wrong, missing an " after 0000-00-00, I keep getting an error with it as it is, should be:

<?php
if($recordsetName->getColumnVal("ColumnName") != "0000-00-00"){
echo $recordsetName->getColumnVal("ColumnName");
}
?>
