How to add an invalid format error message for a email form field?

How dio I add an invalid format error message for a email form field? If the field is empty I wan't the message "Please enter a value", if the value is not anemail address the I wan't to show the message "Invalid format".

This worked with the spry version, how is this done with the JQuery version?

Thanks in advance

Jquery validation does not support different errors for different validation states.

to show different errors for different validation states, you would need to use server side validation, and add required validation and email element validation to the email field, the email validation would need to be set to pass on a blank value.

then use the validation show if to show the different messages for different validation states.
