Changing store theme - anyway to get a fresh start?

I am looking at changing the theme of my store. When I go in to customize and start playing with the color slider, the secondary colors are all over the place and showing me used # times, but not what they are being used for. Also, if I change the color of the text on the front page, it is effecting my live store which I'd prefer not to do until I'm ready to publish the revised store. Is there a way to flush out all of the coloring while I'm customizing the store without effecting my live store?

Theme changes are not visible to site visitors until they are published.

you can see them because you are logged in as the administrator, but a site visitor who is not logged in wont be able to.

if you where to open the site using a different browser ( say login using Safari and make changes, and open the site using Fire Fox) you wouldn't be able to see the changes in the other browser because you would not be logged in.
