Default to index.php?

I have a domain where www.domain.com returns a 500 internal server error, but www.domain.com/index.php works. How can I make my hosting go straight to index.php? I even uploaded a fake index.html to see if it would go to that, and it doesn't. I tried .htaccess and it doesn't seem to do anything at all.

crate an .htaccess file with the following line:

DirectoryIndex index.php

and save it to the site root, if that does not work, contact your host, they will have to correct the problem.
