codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="true" causing problems

I'm using security assist for a user login. There is an enormous amount of PHP code above the DOCTYPE tag, but when I update the Template, I lose the code. I'm told I need to insert <!-- TemplateInfo codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="true" --> within the <head>, but when I do, DW goes haywire and doesn't recognize and color code the code (see image attached).

I tried simply inserting another Editable area above the DOCTYPE as an alternative, but it causes problems with the PHP code.

This is a limitation to using Dreamweaver templates.

when using a template, you have 2 options?

1) all of your behaviors are added to the template.

1) You add the behaviors to individual pages that are based on the template,

you cant do it both ways, some behaviors on the template, and some behaviors on the individual pages.

obviously adding the behaviors to the individual pages is better.

what is it you are trying on the template that you need to add the behaviors to the template?

I've got a SecurityAssist behavior to show or hide a region based upon whether the user is logged in or not for navigational purposes on the template. Funny thing is, this is a nearly identical senario to another site I did where it didn't seem to be a problem. Only difference is that was transitional, this I had as an HTML5 doc, but I tried switching it back and that didn't cut it. So I need to make that section of the template editable, and that will fix the issue?

You will need to convert the template to a theme in order to work around this limitation to Dream,weaver templates.

see the "Using themes in Data Bridge and Design Extender" tutorial on the Data Bridge support page:

Figured out the problem: don't convert an HTML template to PHP by simply adding PHP extension

For the longest time I had issues with DW deleting php code even when codeOutside text was set properly, but it would do it on some sites, and not on others - seemingly without reason. Just in case anyone else runs into this, I figured out what the problem is. It seems to be that you can't just add '.php' to the end of a '.dwt' template file to change an HTML template to a PHP template. For reasons I have yet to fully understand, doing so causes DW to do goofy things. You need to make sure if you intend to do a PHP site, you're starting with a PHP file, and then doing save as a PHP template.

Hmmm, interesting, i have not run into a problem with renaming a template to .php before, but will keep this in mind, thanks for the info.
