Year field problem

Year field problem

I have a db with tables which have a field intended to be a four digit year. When I try to input a value I get the datepicker which makes it a full date, not just a year. How do I get around this? In the tables the field has a type of year(4).
This same problem happens with the update page.

A date picker filed is not intended for picking only the year, instead, use a select list and populate the select list with the years.

Thanks. Made it a text field for entering a four digit year.
