A bit confused about checkout

Hi all

I try to setup a store with downloadable digital products and got stuck with the following issue:

The customer adds products to cart -> checkout with Paypal -> customer pays -> PayPal confirms purchase/payment -> PayPal confirmation is used to set the product to downloadable.

As there are a few options like PayPal Express, PayPal Standard, IPN and so, I got a bit confused about what's the best approach to achieve this?

Using ecart 5.06 and DW CS5.5

Many thanks for any hints

I always recommend to use PayPal Payments pro for Digital Goods.

Payments pro is a real time payment gateway, so the order details will only be stored in the database if the Order is successful.

With Payments standard, you would need to use IOPN to update the order status when paypal processes the transaction with the bank, which is not done in real time.

Thanks for your reply Jason

At the moment im stuck to PayPal Express or Standard :-(

So I imagined to do it the following way:

- customer adds items to cart
- to be able to checkout the customer has to be logged in
- checkout adds order and detail to database
- then goes directly to PayPal (as customer Infos are allready available)
- customer cancels on PayPal and gets returned to a payment canceled page which updates the order status to cancelled by user
- customer pays and gets redirected to success page
- IPN updates order status if successfull payment and sends a notification mail to customer

You think this is ok or do I need to pay attention to something else?

Thanks in advance

If you are using paypal standard, just make sure the customer is aware that the download may not be available immediately, and use IP to update the order status.

The order history pages for the download, should only show the order is the status has been updated to success.
