DFP upload to folder outsite web root

Hi all

Following the suggestions in the tutorial about the Download Center I placed the folder outside of the webroot.
This worked nicely on the WAMP server for testing but after moving it to the linux vps the files don't get uploaded.
The folder rights are set to 777 owner is the internet guest account.

In some other forums they recommend to create an alias in apache, but wouldn't this give url access to the files?

Any hints are highly appreciated

I could resolve this issue by adding the folder path to the open_basedir settings in the php.ini file.
