Please can you help

I have two problems having made a working in a set of sheets made in data assist

1. On the database - we have 5 fields displaying various suppliers costs in fields
Supp1cost , Supp2cost , Supp3cost, Supp4cost, Supp5cost

I need to be able to embed some code which adds these together to show a
"Total cost" field. Please can anybody tell me how to do this as I am relatively
new to MySQL data

2. On the database - we have a table for Part References and a different table for
Customers. I need to make a dynamic drop down menu - so when adding a new part
code - the customer is selected from the Customers Database. How do I bind both
database tables together to achieve this

Many thanks

John

Hi John.

Can you give me more idea of what you are trying to achieve ?

For example, are you comparing the costs of an item from 5 suppliers, or is an item made up of 5 parts from different suppliers ?

What happens if there's a 6th supplier ?

Getting the table structure correct at the beginning of the process can be very important.

Thank you

Hi and thanks for getting back to me

The parts can comprise up to 3 parts so I have built in 5 for safety. There will never be more than 3 but I have added a couple for spares

I need to know how I can make a sum total of cost1+cost2 +cost3+cost4+cost 5 so the record can display the TOTAL cost of the finished unit

Hope this makes sense. Also as regards the addition of a Card to the database - we want to be able to select the Customer it is for when entering the card from a Dydnamic dropdown - so we maintain accuracy when searching by Customer and prevent any misspellings

Regards

John

if I understand you correctly, you have a series of 'parts' which are made of (up to) 3 'components', (I used different wording just so I am clear).

I would use 2 tables. tblpart and tblcomponent, using partid as the foreign keyin the component table.

This way, you can have as few or as many components for each part, without having redundant data fields.

to get your sum total, you would query the component table using the part id as a filter.

if this doesn't seem straightforward, here's an example. - at least then we'll both know if I understand your issue

Hi Craig

Thanks for your help. I am quite new to this. We have an old DBASE database full of data which I converted into Excel and then to SQL.

We have lots of existing data so I cannot vary this very much. Please do you have a private e mail so i can send you some links to the pages so you can see the issue. Maybe you could e mail me on sales@interpak.ltd.uk and I can send user ID and password for you to see what is going on ?

Thanks so much for your help

John
