Popup only 1 time

Hi,

I want to popup a meesage for my visitors. But only the first time they visit the site.

How can I store this in a cookie?

for example:

the visitor visits my site
checking if a cookie exists
if not, show message and store in cookie that the message was shown.
if yes, dont show the message

How can I do this?
