Dynamic menus

Dynamic menus

I'm following your guide on creating dynamic menus and can get it working with my database but the resulting item menu has too many selections, the menu drops down a long way.

My item categories table has main categories and subcategories so is it possible to have a nested intermediate subcategory menu between the item categery menu and the item menu to make the menu choices more manageable.

If so how can this be achieved?

for this you would want to create a categopries and subcategories table:

categories:
categoryID - primary key
categoryName

subcategories
subcategoryID - primary Key
subcategoryCategoryID releates to categories.categoryID
subcategoryName

then in the produtcts table, relate the product to the subcategory using the subcategoryID value.

creating the menu this way is very similar to the tutorial.

for the main level, set it to use the categoryID as the ID.

the second level should use the subcategoryID as the ID
in the filtering section set it to filter using the subcategoryCategoryID as the nesting column.

next, for the products menu, use the productID as the key column, in the filtering section, use the productSubCategoryID column as the nesting column.

Thanks Jason, working on the database changes now.

Is it possible to display a dataassist results type page by clicking on a selection from the second level menu (subcategory) instead of going to the third level (products) detail type page, or can you have both options?

Then when the results page is displayed can an "add to cart" button be added to each result and/or a "view detail" button?

yes, the links in the subcategory can be used to drive a data assist results page.

When you use the search page to search for a category, it will pass query string variables to the results page, in your menu, use those same querystring variables.

yes, you can have both a view details button and an add to cart button in the results page listing.

The database changes are all done now but I'm having difficulty passing the correct query string variables for each menu item selected from the links in the subcategory.

Please could you give me an idiots guide to this bit?

Thanks in anticipation.

Any progress on this?

I'm not sure how far you went. But as Jason stated, first you create the top level categories and using the CategoryID. I recommend that you start with that and get the Categories working, then you will add the nested Sub Categories items to the Main Categories.

Hi Dani, I have got the top level categories and the nested subcategory menus working ok.

The next stage is where I am having difficulty.

I need to display my dataassist generated results page when a subcategory menu item is clicked to display the products within that subcategory.

I think its controlled by the link on the subcategory dynamic menu page but I cant get it to work correctly.

Any help would ge greatly appreciated.

Hi Jason

As suggested by you in an earlier post I have tried to add the query string variables from a search page (of a subcategory chosen at random) to the link for the subcategory dynamic menu but I get the same results displayed on the dataassist generated results page irrespective which subcategory menu selection I make.

How do I get the appropriate results for each indidvidual selection of the subcategory menus.

The search page seems to add a specific subcategoryID to the string and when this is added to the link in the dynamic menu wizzard for the subcategory menu the results for this are returned repeatedly for every subcategry menu selection.
