Update image names and delete original!

I need to know how to accomplish the following:

I have uploaded an image through an insertform to server folder and filename also added to mysql database correctly. On the update page I want to be able to update the record in the database as well as exchange the old image for a new one but keep the original filename in the process. The update to the database works just fine as well as the new file upload but I want to also delete the old image associated with the record when pushing the update button!? I'm sure this is pretty basic but I'm all new to databases and php so please bare with me! ;=) Hope someone can help me with this!
