add to cart not working

Is there a reason why there would be a lag between when you can add separate items to your cart? If I add a product at one size to my cart, it shows up. Then I can click "continue shopping" and it takes me back to the item page, I can select another size and add to cart again, and nothing is added. However, if I wait on the cart page for about 20 or 30 seconds then going back and adding another size works fine.
