£ not coding and so displaying incorrectly

Hi,
I have PowerCMS up and running ok on a site I am building but my client needs to add prices to their page using the pound sign and they are not displaying correctly. When I look at the source generated by entering a £ sign in the editor it is not showing it as £ and so is displaying as a different symbol on the site. I have even tried manually adding the code myself using the source button but as soon as you switch back to normal editing it overrides it and changes back to £. Is this something to do with the CMS or a setting on my database? I've never had this problem before but the CMS I used previously did not use a database to update the content. Could you help please. Thanks
