install / file location question

I got the extention installed OK. I created the DB on the host server. I created the site on dreamweaver, I added the DB to dreamweave. Then I created the index.php page. I added content to the page. The add content window opened and filled in the info and then several files created etc. Got to a point where it said I needed to install powercms before you can preview your pages ....you will need to put your site before launching the wizard from admin_cms/index.php
So I took the cancel and put all the new files that had been created. Went back to the site and called the /admin_cms and the install started. I get to step 4 of 5 where I am asked for the admin user name/password. I get the msg failed to save the settings to the database. check database connections. Everything appears correct. I placed all the new cms directories/files inside the public_html directory. But I did notice that there is mmServerScripts/ directory out in the root. ?? Are all my files in the correct location?
