Ecart With Pay Pal standard and digital download

Hello I have a website with ecart and I use pay pal as my checkout. I also have it set up to for digital downloads with the dl link on the checkout_ success page after pay pal redirects back to my site. Is there a away I can have it so that my customers also receive an email with a link to the download page after the payment has been processed?

Digital Downloads with PayPal Standard is problematic.

First you have to understand that PayPal Payments standard does not process transactions in real time.

Just because you are on the checkout success page, does not mean that the transaction has been processed successfully. At that point, paypal has excepted the transaction and placed it in a queue to processed on a first come first served basis.

you can set your account up to use IPN to make a post to your page with the payment status, on the IPN page, you could set it up to send an email with the links of the down loadable files using Universal Email

see paypals documentation on IPN:

Oh I see. In pay pal it asks to to enable IPN and type in the Notification URL. What would I type in? The checkout_success page?

It's not that simple.

you need to create an ipn page, the ipn page will page that the user never sees, on that page add processing to except the paypal ipn post, and then act according to the status of the post, success or failure.

Refer to the IPN Documentation i linked to previously.

Really with PayPal Standard, you cannot consider the transaction successful or failed til the IPN post is made. When the user reaches the checkout success page, the order status is pending.

Ok I see, before I used authorize.net and worked very well the only thing I wanted to add was a download link in an email to the download page. How would I go about doing that and where would I add the universal email function to do that?

you would need to add universal email to the IPN Page.

you would add the download link to Universal email the same qway it is added to the success page, it would really be no different.

oh ok I see, What about if I am using a local checkout like authorize.net. Where would I add that universal email behavior? The checkout_success page or the confirm page?

With local checkout the Universal Email behavior will be added to the confirm page.

If you use the checkout wizard to create the checkout pages, it will automatically add the email behavior to the confirm page for you.
