mysql 2002 error

just dl'd the ext. but can't get to my localhost mysql server. Error is MySQL error: 2002 Can't connect (see screenshot)

login and pw are good, other products connect.

I've also tried adding the port: localhost:3306

seems simple enough, but I just don't see the problem

OsX system

try using the ip address:
127.0.0.1

for the mysql server instead of the localhost.

New error

Thanks for the reply.

127.0.0.1 got me a new error message:

MySQL error 2013 : lost connection.

screen shot attached.

how about using 127.0.0.1:3306

What is your PHP installation? are you using MAMP?

Mamp 1.9.4

Yeah, a MAMP 1.9.4, straight out of the box. Nothing fancy but it's been working well.

:3306

didn't work either way. 127.0.0.1 or 127.0.0.1:3306

try the advise on this page:
solve-cant-connect-to-local-mysql-server-through-socket-tmpmysqlsock/

and go back to using localhost.

Nope

I am sorry to report that the socket fix on that site was added by MAMP @ installation.

The socket reference in [mysqld] is exactly = to [client] in my.cnf.

hmmm, strange, in a terminal window try adding the following command:

sudo ln -s /Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.sock /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

this should create a symbolic link that will point /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock to /Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.sock
