Internal Server Error

received this message

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webadmin@kundenserver.de and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I was beginning install of gallery - told me did not have version 5 of PHP - worked with 1and1 which had me add a file that would activate version 5 - did that and then clicked on screen to try again and received this error message

thanks

these are directions from 1and1

What do I need to consider if I want to use PHP 5?

With 1&1 Linux hosting packages you have the choice between PHP 4 and
PHP 5. To distinguish a script as PHP 5, simply name the script with the file
extension .php5.

While the PHP developers have done their utmost to ensure compatibility, we cannot
guarantee that PHP 4 scripts will function 100% correctly under PHP 5.

Please note that in contrast to PHP 4, the default for the variable RegisterGlobals and allow_url_fopen is "off".

By default Apache uses PHP 4 for .php extension. If you don't want to rename all your
scripts to .php5 you can do the following:
Create a .htaccess file and place the following line AddType x-mapp-php5 .php in it.

This will tell Apache to use PHP 5 instead of PHP 4 for the extension .php in the
directory the .htaccess is placed and all sub-directories under it.

try creating a php info page.

Create a blank php page, name it phpinfo.php
add the following code:

php:
<?php phpinfo(); ?>

and try to view that in the browser.

If you can only view that page by removing the .htaccess file, it sounds like there is a problem with the .htaccess file.

the only code in the htaccess file should be the one line:

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

and it should be saved to the web root on your host server.
