Tax not being added to total

I have configured the cart, remote checkout, all seems to be in order, EXCEPT for the tax figure , it is not being added to total before going to checkout.
THE CHECKOUT is remote, the shipping flat rate is being added OK.

We are applying it only to orders from our state, is it possible that it will be added by Authorize net once the person enters the address/state? I have not way of knowing if that will be the case as gateway's checkout form is in 'test' mode and I prefere it that way till we know everything is configured correctly.

I creating other carts, starting from zero, and the same problem occurs every time.

PLEASE HELP, I need to resolve this ASAP.
much appreciated

Please post back and describe exactly how your tax rule is defined in your cart so that we can help to determine why it is not occurring. If you are basing it off of the state what value are you comparing in the tax rule for the state?

The value that you are comparing to needs to be set to the state for the user, if it is not the rule will work correctly. If you are using a remote checkout the user will likely be going to the remote site after the checkout. How do you have yours setup? Do you go from the checkout page to the confirm page before going to the gateways site? If so then you should have a chance to grab the user's state before sending them off to get the tax to show properly.

Along with the details please also post back with any relevant files like the checkout, confirm, and a copy of your cart file from within the WA_eCart folder. Make sure to take out any login or gateway credentials from your checkout pages before posting them here in a zip archive.

Tax not being added to total

Eric:
fortunately I solved the problem. Actually your reply was very helpful in finding out what I was doing wrong.Thank You !! it all works perfectly now.

I was 'removing' the checkout button from the cart table and adding a separate checkout button/form into that same page therefore re directing straight to Authorize net payment processing. by skipping checkout and order confirmation steps the tax rule was not applied to the total.
It is confusing , for the customer as well to see 'checkout' button in the cart and again in the checkout form. Then finally in the confirmation page it takes the customer to the payment gateway.

****I do have a new question: Is it possible, in the checkout form, to make any of the fields 'uneditable' or locked once it is sent to authorize net ? ******

thanks

The info that you are sending to Authorize.net comes from the confirm page. Until the confirm page is submitted done of the details are sent. Once the transaction is processed by Authorize.net the details are sent back to your site.

If you are looking to disable the form elements on the checkout form you could do so based on a session variable value. So on your confirm page you should have some session variables set for values from the form like the state. You can check on this session variable on the checkout form, if it has been set then disable the element. The code that does this might look like this:

php:
<input type="text" id="text1" name="text1" <?php echo (isset($_SESSION['the state']) && $_SESSION['the state'] != "")?"disabled='disabled'":"" ?> />
