cart is combining items added when options are different

i have a cart that when the user clicks checkout it goes to my hosts secure domain.

the problem is this:
when i have an item say SHIRT blue size 10
and another item SHIRT red size 8

on the view cart page it shows them separately
but on the cart confirm page it shows them as a quantity of 2 for the first item

additionally the shipping on the confirm page shows as if its charging for 1 item instead of 2. whereas on the view cart page it shows shipping for 2 items.

i hate to post my files here - please let me know if thats needed to get help.

thanks
sam

You should edit your cart object and in the columns tab find the size and ensure that you check the box for unique. You should do this for any column that you would like to make the item unique, like the color.

When you have it setup like this it will not combine the items unless they have the same id and size.
