SMTP and "Cannot modify headers" error

I followed the instructions in the "read-me" file, uploaded the contact form files to my server, and tested the contact form completely unaltered. These are the error messages I received:

Warning: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() in C:\xampp\htdocs\RxSafe\WA_Universal_Email\mail_PHP.php on line 254

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at C:\xampp\htdocs\RxSafe\WA_Universal_Email\mail_PHP.php:254) in C:\xampp\htdocs\RxSafe\contactus.php on line 35

I understand the first one, what is the deal with the second? Also, why didn't I see the thankyou.php popup?

the second error is occurring because of the first error.

the first error is causing the header() function that is used to redirect to the thank you page to throw the second error.

If you fix the first error by referencing a valid SMTP server, you will also fix the second error.
