Labels did not line up

The label below is what I am trying to line up in a symetrical manner.

© 2010 www.afomampi.com Design by XcelData

when I implemented it using <div> or <SPAN> the "Design by XcelData" did not seem to be on the same line as the copy right message -- Both the <div> and the <SPAN> implementation produced the same resolve.

Please the see the attached image. Also see the code that produced the image below.

<div id="footer">

<!-- Please leave this line intact -->
<!-- you can delete below here -->
<div> © 2010 www.afomampi.com </div><div style="float: right">Design by <a href="http://www.xceldatatechnologies.com" target="_blank">XcelData</a></div></div>

</div>

Note: I did not want to use space to seperate the two by using multiple "&nbsp;" and I also did not want to use table.

Q: Does anyone here know what I am doing wrong which did not make the two disjoint statements to be on the same line???

Many thanks in advance.
