IE 8 is a more standards compliant browser, it can handle the use of auto widths.

IE7 and below however cannot.

The menu does not look ok in IE6, the only version of IE that the menu looks ok in is IE8.

for compatibility with IE7 and below, you need to use fixed pixel based width measurements.
