Using Admin through https:// hangs browser up.

My site has been working well since launching.
I have a complete secure checkout process from start to finish finally happening!!
I have come across some issues however lately when adding or editing new products through the Admin section of the site. Update wait times start to take longer than usual and then the browser eventually starts to hang and usually times out.

Well, I finally realized the problem was the .htaccess file that that I created which re-directs ALL traffic to the https:// server. Including all "ADMIN" traffic! Most of the time everything works ok. But, the more updates and edits and page changes I make the worse things seems to get.

So, I concluded that if I just rename the .htaccess file to something like .htaccessOLD (and also wait a bit for the server to refresh) then I can do my editing through Admin without any lag time or errors. (Almost at the speed of light Scotty!)
And it does work fine this way.
However...

Is renaming this file the only solution? I foresee problems renaming this file everytime I need to add products. What if I am working in Admin through .....
and it is during a busy time of the day when the shared hosting server is really being strained... and also what if someone is trying to make a purchase at the same time? They will not be re-directed to the secure checkout, I know that I can change the paypal redirect page but, I was just wondering if anyone else is faced with this issue and what have they done. There must be another way to do all of this in a simpler way? Seems a bit difficult to add products going about it this way.

I hope you can understand my description... any suggestions how to correct this issue would be greatly appreciated. I wouls like to keep the entire visit secure through the https:// protocol.
