Insert field value from joined tables based on form menu select

Hi - wondering if someone can point me in the right direction here. Hopefully I will be able to explain what I am looking to do:

I have 2 tables joined, products and producttypes.

My insert form for the table products has a menu field populated by the producttypes table.

The products table has the following fields:
id
producttype
producttypeshortname

The producttype table has the following fields:
id
shortname

Right now, the field products.producttype is using as it's insert value the option selected for the form menu item producttype.id

However

I'd like to also insert into products.productypeshortname the corresponding value based on the user's selection.

Can you insert 2 values from a form menu item based on 1 selection?

Does this make sense? Any help, pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Dan
