Alternate Image Loading

I want to basicaly have a image set to load but if that image does not exist then a alternative location is polled for the image

for example

image.png is called but does not exist so the script would then load

image.png and if that image is not found it could load another location and so on but mainly i want just one alternative location. I know you can do this using PHPs image size function but it would be nice to have a extention to do it easier.
