You can tell if a file is template derived by examining the code in the file. In code view template derived files have areas of the page that are greyed out and not editable. When you open a template file all of the areas are editable.

I have downloaded the templates and edited them and did not have any trouble doing so. I was only able to edit the html that is in the editable regions though when editing the content file.
