When a product is made not available online, why does it still show on the products detail page in the select options?

Wouldn't it be best not to show it all all, saving the customer having to go through each product option to find ones that are available.

I can see why you would want to still show products that have sold out as this gives an indication of popular items, however if the product has been made not available from the admin panel, why show it at all?
