Persistence Set Session Value not being retained after UPDATE behaviour?

I have an UPDATE behaviour on a page on which I have the Set Session Value set as the ID field for the updated row because I need to pass that to the subsequent page. I can display the session value on the UPDATE page but when the update completes and re-directs to the next page, the session value is wiped.

Why is this? Should the session value remain in session until it's either abandoned or the browser is closed?

Thank you
NJ
