I am looking to avoid DW crashes simply while using DW as well as using Design Extender

In my experience the issue has more to do with the computer than the DW version. I think it might have something to do with the graphics card more than the OS and RAM as well. In my experience some computers crash all of the time and others don't and changing DW version is seldom the solution.
