How do you get the data from your database to display on the webpage?

I have two .php pages that I want the information from my database to populate on those pages. The first page is the account page where I want it to say "Welcome [User's first and last Name]!" and then I have a page where the user can update their information. The problem that I am experiencing is that nothing is showing up.
