Displaying the date properly from a MySQL timestamp date field? Different in MySQLi?

I'm trying to display a date, taken from a TIMESTAMP MySQL database field in the following format:
Monday 18th June 2015

I've checked umpteen resources online but when I try implementing it on my page I just get a blank output. Here's what I tried last, before the 100 previous attempts...
<?php echo(date_format($rsNEWSINFO->getColumnVal("TMSAnewsdate"), 'l jS F Y')); ?>

What am I doing wrong and is there an online resource for formatting MySQLi recordset values somewhere? It sure would be handy.

Thank you.
