Url paramter after login

I have an activation page that on load has

activateaccount?id=23423n42n42n42n423n4

in the url

i then verify that and get login information and pass it to the mysqli login on the same page while the page is rendering.

everything works except the value from the activate account somehow gets passed to the page it redirects to.

i am redirecting to thepage.php

i get redirected to the right page but it has:

thepage.php?id=23423n42n42n42n423n4

when i pass the redirect a value that has a predefined url parameter:

thepage.php?realparam=24134

the redirect works fine and the ?id=23423n42n42n42n423n4 doesnt show.
