Password Protect a page not using groups

I have a normal php site that I created with the extensions and it has powercms functionality. All I want to do is password protect a page for anyone that navigates to that url. I've searched around a bit and every thread seems to talk about using user groups and such but I don't think I can do that since there is no user registration or login (and it isn't needed). The client just wants to make sure only people with a password can download their sensitive documents. This would obviously mean I need to protect the directory that holds these files as well.

I'm pretty sure that they are ok having the page show, just not the documents downloaded freely. So if there is a way to have the password box pop up when someone clicks on the PDF link, that is fine as well.

Recap: User types/clicks the url www.site.com/passwordpage.php , a box pops up asking for a password, they type it in, the page loads and they can click on pdf's to download them.
