uploading files.

is there a better way to upload picture files?
is there an FTP login?
I am attempting to upload a large number of images and it just stops for no reason with no error message about 500 files in.
I also tried to upload a single large zip file and that did the same thing.
there needs to be some better way.
please advise ASAP
