404 errors after setup

Have exact same issues with Win 7 and Xamp (latest).

Changed from WAMP (after support response questioned it and said use XAMP.) where I could at least get a connection created.

All looks fine but when I try to create a database connection I get the 404 error and the message "the server is not running".

Have moved off the iMac because of daily Dreamweaver (CS6) crashes.

Have no desire to run Windows 8 ("never buy version 1 of anything") and I fail to see the point of an iPad clone running on a dual screen desktop...

SO: can anyone other any insight to this? Have wasted 7 long, sleepless days trying to get a simple Date Bridge/Design Extender test site up.

Is it a 64 bit issue?
