Creating a unique username

With SA, is it possible to ensure that the username is unique to each individual? If so, how?

If not, then I thought about taking the username entered, and adding the yet to be created unique id number and combining it with the username. So, if I enter johndoe as a username and it's already taken, and I have 300 users registered, then the unique username that is auto created becomes johndoe301, a combination of username and the DB record id (yet to be created), how can I achieve that?

Does that make sense?

I have all WA extensions, so if it needs something else along with SA, then I have it.
