Changing the default picture in the Site message

I'm using a modified version of the "Purple" Template
In the Site Message area are (Probably 3) images. A background which can change colour when the site colours change, some sort of overlay(I'm not sure if that's true), and a default pile of boxes.
Where do I change these images?
I've tried inserting an image into the area, but all that happens is that a semi-transparent version of my image overlays the background and the pile of boxes.
This has to be easy to do, but I just can't work it out

Any help would be appreciated
